Welcome to the Autumn of Awesome!

It’s that time of year again: time to bust out the woollies, breathe in the crisp autumn air and dust off granny’s pumpkin pie recipe. And as the colours of the leaves are changing, so are the faces around the Otesha office. Last month, we welcomed Josh Martin into the fold as our new Development Coordinator. Josh is thrilled to be joining the team and excited to work with Otesha’s awesome network of Olumni, donors and supporters.

What else is new? Well, we’re so glad you asked!

What are your reasons to dream?

Reasons to DreamThe holiday season is on the horizon, and with it, the inevitable flood of commercial messages urging us to buy the latest gadget or gizmo. Our Reasons to Dream List is a fun opportunity to rethink consumption and remind each other of all of life’s amazing non-material sources of happiness. Check out what simple pleasures and experiential riches others are sharing, and add your own items to our growing collection!
Visit the Reasons to Dream List webpage to participate and watch the video about this campaign’s near-death origin story: www.reasonstodream.otesha.ca/

Book a workshop for your school or organization

KAIROS Blanket Exercise

This fall, our pool of wonderful volunteer facilitators are busy connecting with schools and organizations in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. Their mission? To deliver the KAIROS Blanket Exercise: a 60-90 minute interactive workshop that traces the shared history of Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. Participants assume the role of Indigenous nations by standing on blankets arranged on the floor. What follows is a moving exploration of the complex relationships formed among peoples and nations from pre-contact times to the present day.

Tours 2015: The countdown is on!

Otesha bike tours

That’s right: the countdown to our 2015 cycling tour dates is officially underway! Each year, the Otesha Project organizes and trains teams of cycling performers that tour for two months, travelling a section of Canada by bicycle. Along the way, these volunteer velo-voyagers deliver Otesha's unique brand of empowering theatre in elementary schools, secondary schools, community venues and university and college campuses. We’ll be announcing our 2015 Cycling and Performance Tour dates in early November, so stay tuned!

October challenge: Be a Cheerful Chocolateer

The scariest part about October 31st isn't the ghost stories. It’s the stories behind a lot of the chocolate that kids will chowing down on this time of year. As Halloween approaches, you’re going to notice a whole lot more candy on your grocery store shelves. This month’s challenge is to learn more about the environmental and social impacts of the cocoa industry and to find Fair Trade alternatives for your candy bowl this year.
